In a training accident, Germany’s best short tracker bangs a teammate with her face. She still drives to the World Cup at the weekend.

Despite a training accident, Lisa Eckstein will take part in the Shorttrack World Championship in Beijing. The 23-year-old injured himself last week during a competition-specific training in Dresden.

As Eckstein of the “Sächsische Zeitung” reported, she was on the track with another athlete when both came down. “Somehow we both fell and she was lying in the gang in front of me. I hit my face in her face,” said the Dresden native, describing the course of the accident.

Despite the unfortunate situation, Eckstein was still lucky. Cut wounds on the right cheek and on the ear had to be sewn with five or six stitches, but a more serious injury was saved. The cut on the cheek ranged almost to the muscle, while the cartilage was also affected on the ear.

Nevertheless, Eckstein does without additional facial protection. “There are few Dutch women and, as far as I know, two Canadians who fall back on a full visor,” she said. Although this option was offered by her trainers, a visor is out of the question for her for the time being.
