The only goal earlier in the regular season on Wednesday evening (12.03.2025) had already scored Conor Gallagher in the 1st minute, followed by 119 highly intensive minutes without further hits.

Altlético tour after 27 seconds

In the first leg, the royal team had put the start of lightning and took the lead early due to Rodrygo. After the compensation by Julián Alvarez (32nd), Brahim Diaz (55th) had achieved the 2-1 winning goal in the middle of a strong phase of Atlético. That was equalized in the second leg after 27 seconds.

After a weak clarification campaign by central defender Raúl Asencio, the hosts started a lightning attack on the right side: Rodrigo de Paul fit in the middle, where Raúl Asencio missed the right moment for intervention – the gallagher, who was rushing, used the real confusion.

Good mix of the Rojiblancos

The royal then had a lot of trouble finding their line. Atlético found a good mix of foreclicking and soaked back in order to start the depths of attack -like attacks again.

A little excitement came about in the 20th minute when a cross from Vinicius Junior easily touched Giuliani Simeone – the totally sovereign referee Szymon Marciniak continued.

Nothing to see from Mbappé

While Vini Junior at least tried at least afterwards, Kylian Mbappé couldn’t see anything in the entire first round: behind the chain, Atlético gave him no room for his dreaded speed runs, the Frenchman did not come at all in final positions.

On the other hand, Alvárez had two reasonably dangerous actions, but it was not really dangerous for Thibaut Courtois in the goal of the royal.

Vini Junior fails dramatically from the point

There was no personnel reaction from Coach Carlo Ancelotti at the restart, and Real also found no means in a playful way. It took until the 68th minute before Mbappé was really noticeable for the first time, and it promptly became spectacular: After a strong solo run, Atlético defender Clément Lenglet took both arms to help in the penalty area to stop the superstar, Marciniak immediately pointed to the penalty point.

After a brief discussion with substitute Lucas Vásquez, Vini Junior grabbed the ball – and completely lost his nerves. His shot went far over and clearly, it was a penalty disaster in the Roberto Baggio and David Beckham category.

Correa is forgetting the first match ball

Atlético then had the momentum on his side again, but developed how much too little risk of scoring. In the 90th minute it would have been committed to preventing the impact for Courtois, but the substitute Ángel Correa let Antonio Rüdiger get out, but then shot over the goal from a short distance.

In the extension, Real had significantly more game shares, it was still a hard, intensive and thrilling duel. What was almost completely missing, however, were the goal scenes. Both defensive lines showed an extremely concentrated idea, but many actions were neutralized in midfield or by the defensive, the attack player was neutralized – even Mbappé shone with a hazard at a dangerous Atlético counter.

Alvárez touches the ball twice – a penalty gate -called

It became absolutely dramatic in the penalty shootout. Julian Alvárez converted his shot in the way – but after studying the pictures, the referees recognized the goal again because the Argentine had touched the ball twice.

As a result, Lucas Vasquez also shot for Real and Marcos Llorente for Atlético, so that the crucial shot was reserved for Rüdiger: With a lot of trouble, the ex-Stuttgarter, Jan Oblak had almost kept the ball, rather he was still in the goal. Real had always prevailed against Atletico in the Champions League – in the final 2014, in the 2015 quarter -finals, in the final 2016 and in the 2017 semi -finals.

Real now against Arsenal

Real now meets FC Arsenal, who won the first leg at PSV Eindhoven 7: 1 and had a 2-2 against the Dutch in the second leg.
