For years, “Eisei” belonged to the top of the world in ski jumping. Most recently, the DSV eagle only flew behind. Now he has made a difficult decision.

Ski jumping world champion Markus Eisenbichler ends his career at the end of the season. This was announced by the German Ski Association (DSV) on Wednesday. “I have thought a lot in the past few months, and my gut feeling tells me: it is the right time. It feels good,” Eisenbichler is quoted in a message from the DSV.

The 33-year-old celebrated his debut in the World Cup in the 2011/12 season and was a guarantee of success for the German team for a long time. Among other things, he won gold in the individual competition at the 2019 World Cup in Seefeld, plus five World Cup gold medals in the team, in Beijing he won 2022 Olympic bronze with the team. However, Eisenbichler has had to struggle in recent years, among other things, he recently missed the World Cup in Trondheim due to performance.

“Ski jumping was my life-with heights and depths, with emotions that can hardly be put into words. I was able to celebrate incredible success: World Cup, World Cup victory, medals-successes, of which I could only dream of as a child,” said Eisenbichler, who was in German for the RAW-AIR tour in German, which started on Thursday: “I have lived my dream. But I am also looking forward to what is coming: new challenges, new experiences and finally time for things that have so far been neglected. “

DSV sports director Horst Hüttel praised Eisenbichler as “one of the very big ski jumpers”. Eisenbichler, who can imagine a work as a trainer, was “always an athlete”, said Hüttel, “who was looking for the open word who was looking for the dialogue and who never bent. That is why he was so popular with the fans and colleagues in the whole ski jump community.”
