In addition to Julian Köster, VfL Gummersbach has another German national handball player. Miro Schluroff was nominated for the European Championship qualification. The use of Juri Knorr, on the other hand, is questionable.

Handball-Trainer Alfred Gislason (65) reacted to the impending failures of Justus Fischer, Renars Uscins and Juri Knorr and, as a precaution, has nominated the back area player Schluroff (24) for the games against Austria on Thursday (13.03.2025, 6 p.m.) and Saturday (4:30 p.m.). This was announced by the German Handball Bund (DHB) on Monday.

“I am incredibly happy for Miro, who made this outstanding in the past games. Overall, his development has been constantly pointing up in recent months, so the nomination for the national team is only the logical consequence and confirmation of his achievements,” said VfL managing director Christoph Schindler.

Schlurof himself said: “Of course I’m glad that I get this chance and of course I want to use it.”

Use of Fischer, Uscins and Knorr “unsure”

In Hanover, Gislason previously gathered his team around captain Johannes Golla to prepare for the two games in Vienna and in the state capital of Lower Saxony. Whether Fischer, UScins and Knorr can play is “currently unsure”, as it was said.

In November, Germany started the qualification for the European Championship 2026 in Denmark, Sweden and Norway with two victories against Switzerland and Turkey. “Nothing changes in our task: We have two difficult games in front of us against Austria, from which we want to get the best out on Thursday and Saturday. It’s about successfully taking the next steps in the qualification for the European Championship,” said national team manager Benjamin Chatton.
