Bayer Leverkusen’s exceptional skier Florian Wirtz will have to pause in the coming weeks and will also miss the round of 16 of the Champions League against Bayern Munich on Tuesday (9 p.m.).
As the double winner announced on Monday, the young star in the Bundesliga-Piel against Werder Bremen suffered an inner ligament injury in the right ankle on Saturday and the Werkelf will be missing “several weeks”.
“The failure of Florian naturally meets us in this phase of the season, but we will catch him with a strong team,” said Bayer’s managing director Sport Simon Rolfes: “We know Florian and know that he will come back as soon as possible. Everyone will support him in doing so.
Use in the national team unlikely
Due to the injury, Wirtz’s deployment in the German national team in the quarter-final games of the Nations League against Italy seems unlikely. The selection of national coach Julian Nagelsmann contested the first leg on March 20 in Milan, the second duel is in Dortmund three days later.
Wirtz would be closed anyway in the first leg. Shortly after his substitution against Bremen (0: 2) after a foul from Mitchell Weiser, Wirtz had to leave the place again and was driven to a clinic in Cologne after the game. Weiser saw the yellow card for the foul, the Leverkuseners called for a dismissal.
