A disciplined person, with a great sense of duty, an activist, an artistic photographer, a passionate of nature. This is recognized Paola MarchTto During his talk with news. An intense, determined and international flight.
He was born in Venice in a privileged family. She is the Countess Marta MarchTto and granddaughter of Gaetano MarchTto, founder of the Textile Group who owned Hugo Boss and Valentino and who consolidated himself as one of the strongest companies in Italy.
As a very young man, he showed multifaceted interests. He studied anthropology, psychology and performance at the Lee Strasberg school. She was a journalist in Italian media, author, television producer, photojournalist, and also a fashion designer. In addition, he worked in politics.
“I worked in politics for many years in the judge of Judge Di Pietro, of Mani Pulite, as a form of activism, not to make a career, as at another time I volunteered. When I see something that is wrong I like to fix it or solve the problems of people. I was in the Council of Zone 1 of the Mayor’s Office of Milano, which corresponds to the Historic Center. He was a group leader, but he didn’t handle funds, luckily. We were an advisory body, we had to relieve the problems and consultations of citizens. The problem is that later nothing was done. It was frustrating, I didn’t like it. If there is no common will, things do not specify. I learned that it is a disaster, that people who put there do not have politics as a mission. There is a lot of inertia, it is not resolved, everything is as muddy, ”he recalls.
He lived intensely the cultural world of Rome of the seventies. He treated with artists, painters, filmmakers, poets and politicians, and met characters like Lina Wermüller, Pier Paolo Passolini and Melina Mercuri, among others. They were very fun and a high -level bohemian life.
He currently lives between Europe and South America and is the mother of Beatrice and Carlo Borromeo and grandmother of six grandchildren. His daughter is married to Pierre Casiraghi, son of Princess Carolina de Monaco, and resides in Monaco. His son lives in Paris.
Recently opened “Antarctica, beauty that melts. Aurora” In the Libertad Palace, Domingo F. Sarmiento Cultural Center, a photographic sample that will run until April 20. The exhibition is the result of a three -week trip that made an Irízar Almirante in the year 2023. The photographs reproduced in large size show the beauty of the white continent: Icebergs, volcanoes and landscapes during the time of the dawn.
News: What is your life purpose today?
Paola MarchTto: In principle, I am a mother and grandmother. The grandchildren in the life of an older person are fundamental. I am very grateful to the life of having them. I have six: Cristophore (10), Alma (9), Stefano (7), Francesco (6), Ernesto (3) and Ida (1). When I am in Europe I am attentive to them and I try to see them as much as possible. On the other hand, I am an activist person. I always went, since childhood.
News: Why is he photographer?
MarchTto: I started taking photographs of very young, with a friend of my sister at age 16. Then, throughout my life, I took photos for me, by passion, on trips. In addition, I was a graphic reporter in the 1970s and ’80. In 2021, the curator Paola Rottolo, who knew my works, invited me to expose in the Biennale di Venezia de Architetura, in the Italian Pabellone, which addressed issues related to climate change. I had already founded the Eye-V Gallery, a group of fabulous photographers from different parts with which we do cultural projects. We are not environmentalists in a strict sense, but we are all people who feel a lot of nature and we have a kind of mystical look on it. Our main purpose is to be ambassadors of nature. For example, we now did an ode to the ocean. We are gathering strength to promote nature in terms of value.
News: What interests you to tell you?
MarchTto: What I want to show is the intrinsic miracle of nature, the divine element that nature has. Harmony, magic, beauty. It can be a landscape, a floor, a flower, a jungle. It is a mystical search.
News: At the moment a sample of his is exhibited on Antarctica in the Libertad Palace.
MarchTto: Yes, I made two trips to Antarctica. The first was with the National Geographic Explorer in 2020. At that time I could only take photos with an iPhone that were later exhibited at the Biennial of Venice, Madrid and Buenos Aires, among other places.
News: And the second trip?
MarchTto: It was in 2023 when I returned to Antarctica with the crew of the Irízar almirante sara. To be able to be part of that trip we were working for a long time, it was a long practice, it was not something simple. They accepted me and went with a companion, photographer Lorenzo Poli, from Eye-V Gallery. We take photos of the landscape and also from the trip backstage. We made a photoreport that showed life aboard the ship, which we later presented in May 2024. In that expedition we also visited several artactic bases as part of the mission. In the current sample that is in the Palacio Libertad you can see the landscapes we photograph during that trip of ’23.
News: What Antarctica did you find?
MarchTto: I met a landscape, where the ice were quite melted and with a not very cold temperature. It was planned less 15 and there were two degrees above zero. It shows that this kind of marine scab that the Rompehielos had to break to advance was no longer or there was much less than before. The change is noted following melting. In 2020 he had photographed several different ways and in the ’23 I have only four icebergs photographed.
News: How is your life in general?
MarchTto: I like to paint, I have very good friends from different parts, from different eras, I am even in contact with schoolmates. I have many worlds because I have lived in several places. Now I live seven months in Europe, I have an apartment in Milano, and my life there is grandchildren and work. The rest of the time I am mainly in Uruguay, I live in a farm near Punta del Este, and I go to Buenos Aires from time to time, where I have an apartment. In South America my life is from friends and work. I am also very athlete, way, swim, it does well, that’s why I prefer to live near nature. In work, I have a printer in Milano, one in Montevideo and another in Buenos Aires, alternate impress work, and I have an Italian place that represents me. In October I will make a sample in Madrid and I have projected two exhibitions in Milano, in ’26 and in ’27.
News: What makes it feel good?
MarchTto: I think we all need silence, what we need most is peace, and we do not have it, because in the big cities there is no peace, they became very inhuman. There is no closeness, there is no more this social fabric, solidarity that there were before, and that is still seen in some villages.
News: What is the luxury for you?
MarchTto: Luxury as a sum of objects or properties is vulgar and does not belong to me. In my family they taught me sobriety. For me today luxury is to have peace, an isolated place, someone to trust that solve the problems. It would also be a luxury to have some hope about the human race and not see all this cool policy with all those oligarchs to power, which only think of benefit, in power. Some are psychopaths.
News: How does the arrival of its 70s live?
MarchTto: I prefer the beginning of the decade than the end. I will be a 70’s young woman instead of a neighborhood of 60. I feel very vital. I also get tired and stress me, because I don’t stop, I work very much.
News: And money? How important is for you?
MarchTto: It is very important, guarantees health assistance, access to certain security, is a working instrument. But it is not a motivation for me. I do not understand the love of money for money itself. Nor do I understand entrepreneurs who are not patron. My grandfather Gaetano MarchTto created the social city or city of harmony along with the architect Bonfanti. He made houses for leaders, for workers, theater, social center. He was neither a communist nor a fascist. He was an illuminated entrepreneur and an advance. To his burial were thousands of his workers from his companies crying. He had a paternalistic treatment, but always better than the total indifference of many powerful of our time. Oligarchs are late now that they do not understand that social consultation is the only form of coexistence.
News: Are you in a couple? Are you in love?
MarchTto: No comment. I don’t tell anything about my private life. I would have very good stories, but I don’t count to preserve the privacy (privacy).
News: Are you not going to tell anything about your relationship with Carolina de Monaco?
MarchTto: I can only say that I have the best of the consuegras. Actually, I like to tell Coabuela. I will not count anything else.
