Marimekko released his latest artist -driven special collection.
Artist Petra Börner The heart jumped on joy and surprise as Marimekko’s creative leader Rebekka Bay contacted him and offered the opportunity to cooperate. Börner had dreamed of working for Marimekko, and now it was becoming true.
– Marimekko has had a clear impact on my aesthetics from a young age. There is also a world of nature in my work, so there is a core idea that unites us. I also see similarity in a dynamic, graphical approach to the use of colors and composition. I think we also share bold and uncompromising aesthetic visions, Börner ponders exclusively in an interview with Iltalehti.
Marimekko released his latest Artist Series collection this week. Artist Series is a program within which Marimekko cooperates with both famous and slightly unknown artists. Artist Series respects the time when the founder of Marimekko Armi Ratia invited artists and other creative people to design patterns that were applied to Marimekko products.

The fourth Artist Series artist, Swedish but currently living in London, is known for his handicraft combining strong colors and organic forms. New patterns are seen in both Marimekko’s clothing and home products.
“More is more”
When the collaboration started, Bay and Marimekko’s team introduced Börner ideas for his work, which they particularly liked, and examples of his works they would like to study as prints. However, Börner says he has had quite free hands to create his own collection. Only Marimekko’s roof theme, the “flower anatomy”, was given as the guideline.
– Throughout the year, in Marimekko’s collections, we are studying plant themes, nature and especially flowers, which are a repeated theme in Petra’s art. His style is lush and lively, the ever -changing nature of the flowers. Petra’s works of art are perfect for Marimekko’s cheerful and optimistic look, bringing something new and perhaps even surprising to the Marimekko community, Bay says.
The collection includes both clothing and home textiles and dishes. Marimekko
Börner describes the collection that created as a result of the cooperation as a “more is more -type collection”.
– It’s the way I like. Hope there are others that this attracts. I never know where my job ends up or whether other people like it. That’s not the reason why I do my job, but I make me very happy when people react to it. I hope the collection brings joy, good vibes and confidence to the people who see it!
“I could move to Helsinki”
Finnish culture was already familiar to Börner through Finnish literature, music and art and design. He also had Finnish friends. Nevertheless, Helsinki only became known for the first time through Marimekko’s cooperation.

– Indeed, Finnish aesthetics have been present throughout my life, and its stories have also influenced my thinking and approach to art, doing and expression. I feel very close to the Finnish lifestyle and I love the in -depth commitment and warmth I have experienced in my encounters. Aesthetics also moves me deeply. It feels familiar to my Swedes, but also surprisingly different. There is a tacit self -confidence that is always present, and the attempt to do things to the fullest and prudent, seeking longevity, Börner says.
During the design of the collection, Börner spent a lot of time in Finland and visited different destinations.
– I immediately felt I could move to Helsinki. Although I was told that it was so small and very cold, everyone looked happy while living there and it sticks. I love the cool self -confidence and great heart I encounter.

“Let’s make it” attitude
Börner has previously worked as an illustrator for The New York Times and Voguee. Marimekko’s design team with which the collection was born, Börner speaks particularly warmly and respecting.
– I like how thoroughly and perfect the team worked on the project. Everyone was involved and worked towards a strong, common goal. Each person was vital and significant for the whole project. As an outsider who has collaborated with different clients worldwide, I am attracted to this conscientious and inclusive process.
Börner says she loves powerful colors. Finding the right shades and achieving the balance seemed particularly important. The team worked together to determine the colors that work in all materials and textures.
Börner himself considers the Vildstälk felt particularly successful. It shows the pattern on both sides of the product. Marimekko
– The Marimekko team is great to find solutions to customize the art of art while maintaining its nuclear fluid. High carefulness and technical expertise helped to turn my work of art from Langa to beautifully woven pieces.
As one of his own favorites, Börner mentions the Vydstjälk junk blanket.
– It feels like a painted work of art and also acts as a mirror image on the wrong side of the blanket, just as my artwork often does. The collaboration with the Marimekko team has been great, they have such a positive “make it” attitude.
Artist Series
Marimekko’s Artist Series series invites rising and established artists to work with Marimekko and offers artists a platform in the form of Marimekko products to present their skills.
– This also gives us the opportunity to expand the boundaries of creativity in the field of art and printing technology, from which we are worldwide. Every artist collaboration requires customized techniques and special printing methods to achieve an authentic result that respects the integrity of the artwork, says Marimekko’s creative director Rebekka Bay.
Rebekka Bay from Denmark has worked with several international brands. Currently, she is Marimekko’s creative director. Marimekko
In the past, Artist Series collections have been made by a French artist and sculptor Virginie HecherArtist living in New York Landon metz and an artist living in Barcelona Sabine Finkenauer.
– Every cooperation has taken our emphasis on new dimensions. I’m excited to continue researching emphasis on future collaborative projects. Artist Series is a great opportunity for us not only to celebrate our heritage as a printing house, but also further develop it. In addition, Artist Series is a way of continuing to build Marimekko’s artistic heritage and expands our ever -growing archive with over 3,500 patterns, Bay rejoices.
