Nice animal news! We have eight big grazers in Zoetermeer. No, not hungry Zoetermeerders, but a herd of eight Scottish Highlanders. Wednesday afternoon, March 5, the imposing animals moved from the Broekpolder in Vlaardingen to the Zoetermeerse Buytenpark.

Taurus Cliff took his wife and two little ones, three young bulls and a young cow to Zoetermeer. The cattle replaced the Exmoor Ponies that were removed from the Buytenpark due to health reasons.

Single journey Zoetermeer

The eight cattle were caught in the Broekpolder on Wednesday morning and loaded into a truck. They received a free one -way ticket to Zoetermeer where the driver led them out of the car via the tailgate. A few Highlanders pulled a sprint, others immediately started eating from the juicy blades of grass. The huge giants were interested in the herd of galloway cattle across the street, but they got a bit scared of the Drenthe heath sheep. “They have never seen sheep,” says manager Karina Rijpstra.

Walkers and cyclists could not get their luck when they stood face to face with the mostly red -brown grazers. People took selfies, photos of the animals and shouted oh and ah. Karina: “These animals live outside all year round. They have a warm fur and can therefore handle low temperatures. They have enough food here, such as trees and blackberry bushes. “

From Vlaardingen to Zoetermeer

Why this move? The Broekpolder in Vlaardingen gets more than 16,000 new trees. Jong Bos is vulnerable and that means that the Highlanders could no longer stay there. They would see those young trees as tasty snacks.

Be warned

The eight Scottish Highlanders are used to living in a busy recreational area. Despite that, it is not smart to get close to the animals, to feed or stroke them. The Highlanders are of enormous size and have large, sharp horns. If you want to prevent a confrontation, then stick to the following:

  • Keep your dog leashed
  • Do not feed and stroke
  • Keeps away
  • Do not cross a mother with calf
