Not only the Danes and other Europeans are in turmoil about the hot -tempered wish of US President Trump to annex Greenland, but also the icy nature on the spot seems upset.
Recent satellite photos of NASA show long white strings that turn into drardy curls of the island, into the sea east. Drawing that the unapproachable landscape would rather not be incorporated to the United States?
The photo shows the southeastern point of Greenland, an ice cream area of about 340 kilometers long, Kold with Fjords. Snow hunts over the surface, fragments of the ice sheet glide through the fjords into the North Atlantic Ocean.
Warm
That happens every winter, there is no political involved. According to experts from NASA, the amount of sea ice that was along the coast of Greenland was about the time of the year at the end of February. No Trump effect, therefore.
Or, but different? In the entire North Pole area, exceptionally little sea ice was found around the same period, according to scientists from NASA’s National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) who monitor the area. A consequence of the relatively warm winter. Or would the geopolitical warming of the earth play a role in recent months?
Let’s keep it scientific. The spiral-shaped patterns in the sea ice that can be seen on the satellite photo along the coast of Greenland are caused by vortks in which the sea ice ends up. They are in turn formed by current and wind. Part of the sea ice also does not come from Greenland, the experts believe, but has its origins further north in the polar area, it is ‘old ice’ that is supplied by the East-Groenlandstroom that runs in a southerly direction.
As the sea ice removes from Greenland, the vortex phenomenon decreases. Eventually the floating shots on the warm West-Spitsbergen stream, with water that fluctuates between 6 and 8 degrees. Then it’s out with the ice.
