Before the German round of 16 in the “premier class”, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has to make an important decision. It’s about his top stars.
Bayer Leverkusen’s balance against FC Bayern can be seen. Under coach Xabi Alonso, the Werkelf is still unbeaten, the Munich team most recently threw out of the DFB Cup-and dominated the opponent in mid-February at 0-0 in the Bundesliga. Now the double winner is planning to add to the German round of 16 of the Champions League. But coach Alonso faces a possible tactical dilemma.
With Aleix García, Robert Andrich, Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka and Florian Wirtz, several of his top performers are threatened by a yellow lock. The latter three are particularly important key figures in the Leverkusen game. After two yellow cards, however, they are under observation, would miss the second leg on March 11th in Leverkusen.
Bayern, on the other hand, are less at risk in comparison: only Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry have two yellow cards in the account. For Leverkusen, the question now arises whether Alonso lets his players appear in the best, despite the risk on Wednesday.
In the past, at least the Spaniard had not been influenced by possible barriers. So he relyed on the also pre -reloaded Edmond Tapsoba and Piero Hincapié at the league game against Holstein Kiel (2-0). In fact, the Ecuadorian saw yellow and was missing in his team’s 4-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Granit Xhaka also made it clear in the previous season that he did not want to be spared despite the impending lock. Before the game against Darmstadt (2-0) in February, the midfield strategist informed his trainer: “I gave a clear sign that I have more experience and try to go into the duels with the help of the team as little as possible.”
The round of 16 in the Allianz Arena starts at 9 p.m. Here you can find out where you can follow the game live.
