Cyclist Mathieu van der Poel starts his road season unexpectedly on Tuesday. The 30-year-old former world champion of Alpecin-DECEUNINCK starts in the Belgian one-day race De Samyn Classic. His team announced that on Instagram the day before the game.
Van der Poel, who became the cyclocross champion for the seventh time last month, initially seemed to start the road season next week in the Italian Tirreno-Adriatico.
“If it tickles too badly, you just have to race,” Van der Poel now explains on Instagram.
Van der Poel rode the Samyn Classic once before, in 2021. He then became 37th. There are 29 cobblestones in the course between Quaregnon and Dour in Belgium. The course is regularly a prey for sprinters.
