The last time Holstein Kiel went into the 24th Bundesliga matchday. But after a victory in Berlin it is clear: the northern light is no longer at the bottom.
Kiel’s success in Berlin shortens the gap to relegation place 16 to just one point. The match winner of the game was Armin Gigović, who scored the only goal of the afternoon shortly before the break (43rd minute).
Union seemed to have caught the sporting low of the 0: 6 bankruptcy at Borussia Dortmund last weekend. In a lively initial phase, the Berliners were the game -determining team that forced Holstein on the defensive.
However, the numerous flanks in the penalty area rarely found a buyer. Timon Weiner in the Kieler Tor was challenged for the first time when Max Schwill unintentionally steered the ball onto his own goal after a corner (12th).
The Berlin swing of the first quarter of an hour was subsequently lost. Kiel managed to move the action from his own danger zone, but rarely found a remedy in the attack against safely standing Berliners. In an increasingly balanced duel without highlights, both teams neutralized. Shortly before the break, Gigović successfully completed one of the rare Kiel advances in the Berlin penalty area.
Union started the second half with a new momentum and pushed for the equalization. Weiner was again asked by a teammate (46.) after a racket of Nicolai Remberg, but proved to be a safe backing as before. The Köpenickers often wore the ball near the Kiel gate.
However, real danger rarely arose. Union was lucky when Shuto Machino hit the post from a distance (73.). The hosts continued to ran with many interruptions in a heated final phase – ultimately without success.
