In 2010, Van den Broek and Wijks experienced the bankruptcy of HFC Haarlem. “It was really a shame that the last season was full of misery and we could no longer focus on football. In 2008/09 (the season before) we were still shared club top scorer. Our interaction was really good. If Marvin had a good day, he was really untenable for the left backs in the first division.”
His old trainer Jan Zoutman agrees. “A Marvin in shape was really difficult to stop. He was very fast and was also able to change position with our striker, Laurens ten Heuvel. In the last season of Haarlem there was also a lot of interest in him. Marvin finally ended up at FC Magdeburg in the third Bundesliga and had a nice career.”
Legendary goal against Telstar
For Zoutman, there is one moment of Wijks heading and shoulders above. “We had to visit Telstar for the KNVB Cup in September 2009, of course the arch rival of Haarlem. Marvin made a great goal in that match. Those competitions were always special and because of his goal we won 3-1 in Velsen-Zuid. He naturally made himself immortal.”
