The Argentine Society of Vaccination and Epidemiology (Save) launched the awareness campaign “vaccinated, ready, now!”, With the aim of highlighting the relevance of immunization at all stages of life. Under the motto “To beat diseases, vaccination is the best way to arrive first”, the initiative seeks to encourage the population to keep their vaccination scheme up to date.

The campaign encourages citizens to go to vaccinations throughout the country to receive the recommended doses according to age, the place of residence, the health condition or occupation. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of adequate information to protect not only individual health, but also that of family and entire communities.

“One of the main challenges today is to make vaccination again to be a priority on the agenda of families. When risk perception decreases, many people tend to postpone or not give priority to vaccination,” said the doctor Analía Rearte, president of Save. However, he stressed that in Argentina vaccine confidence remains high, so campaigns seek to strengthen the message about the importance of attending vaccination and completing immunization schemes.

Diseases that reappear

Diseases such as polyomyelitis, measles and rubella have been eliminated in Argentina, but continue to circulate in other countries. “Measles, for example, circulates continuously in other regions and, due to the high global connectivity, if vaccination coverage is not kept high, there is a high risk of reintroduction,” reloaded.

He also stressed the need to support high coverage to avoid the resurgence of controlled diseases, such as haemophilus influenzae type B meningitis, pneumonia and epiglotitis. He also mentioned the case of hepatitis A, which before the inclusion of the vaccine in the calendar was the main cause of liver transplant in children under 10 years, and since then there have been no transplants in this age group.

Vaccines

“For years, vaccination ceased to be focused exclusively on childhood. Currently, there are vaccines for all stages of life,” said Rerararte. He pointed out that older adults are especially vulnerable to diseases such as influenza and pneumonia, which can cause serious paintings and even death. He also recalled the importance of keeping vaccines such as hepatitis B and tetanus, whose reinforcement must be applied every 10 years.

Myths about vaccines

Disinformation is a constant challenge. “During the Covid-19 pandemic, numerous false messages circulated, which reinforced the need to communicate with evidence,” Rearte said. Among the most common myths, he denied the following:

Vaccines cause autism: “This myth originated in a fraudulent study that has been denied. There is no scientific evidence that relates vaccines with autism.”

Vaccines

Vaccines contain dangerous ingredients: “Adjuvants and preservatives in vaccines are present in minimal amounts and have been evaluated to guarantee their safety.”

If many people are vaccinated, I don’t need to vaccinate me: “This thought puts collective immunity at risk. If too many people stop vaccinating, diseases can reappear.”

Vaccines can cause the disease they try to prevent: “Inactivated virus vaccines cannot cause the disease. Some attenuated virus vaccines can generate mild symptoms, but do not develop the disease in their full form.”

Prevenible vaccine diseases no longer exist, so it is not necessary to get vaccinated: “Although some diseases have been eliminated in certain countries, they can reintroduce if vaccination coverage goes down.”

Vaccines

The “vaccinated, ready, now! It seeks to put the population a step forward in disease prevention. “Vaccines not only protect those who receive them, but also their surroundings, helping to interrupt the circulation of viruses and bacteria. In this way, they create a shield that protects the entire community against potentially serious diseases. Have vaccines a day up to date It is a right, but also a responsibility, “he said.
