The Christian Democrats of Friedrich Merz have won the elections of the German Bundestag. This is apparent from the first forecasts after the polling stations closing at 6 pm. They give the list combination CDU/CSU the most votes with 28.5 percent. The extreme right -wing AfD by Alice Weidel finished second with 20 percent of the votes. The SPD of retiring Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz suffers a historic loss and managed to convince only 16.5 percent of voters.
