Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt is dealing with the Dutch record champion Ajax Amsterdam in the round of 16 of the Europa League. This was the result of the draw in Nyon on Friday.
The only German representative and title holder of 2022 remained in the tournament will first travel to Amsterdam on March 6, seven days later the second leg in Frankfurt. Should the team of coach Dino Toppmöller prevail, Tottenham Hotspur or Az Alkmaar would wait in the quarterfinals (April 10/17).
Eintracht had completed the preliminary round of the Europa League, which was held for the first time in the league format and had thus moved directly into the round of the last 16. As a twelfth, Ajax made a detour via the playoffs and prevailed there in two games (2-0 and 1: 2 NV) against Union St. Gilloise from Belgium.
Now the two clubs meet for the first time in a competitive game.
In the current season, Ajax is currently at the top of the table in the Eredivisie with two points ahead of defending champion PSV Eindhoven. Overall, the 1995 Champions League winner won 36 national championships, most recently in 2022.
