A blue eye, bruises in his face and some bruised ribs. At the end of May last year, Martin sustained the injuries when he was hit in the Processiepark in his hometown. The aggression turned against Martin after he had admitted it for a woman who was attacked by the same group.
“They stood around the woman with a group of fifteen young people and pelted her with balloons. Most were filled with water. I could still see the fun there, because after all we have all been young. But there were also balloons where they had put stones and then it will be a different story. I thought I had the fullest right to say something about it, “says Martin.
The video on which the incident could be seen caused a storm of indignation on social media. Apart from a pinched nerve in his right arm, Martin has not left any permanent injury to the mistreatment. Martin is also mentally on top again: “What do you think? I can’t be fooled, do I? ”

After the mistreatment of Martin, the measure was full for the municipality of Rucphen. A prohibition of gathering was introduced for young people between 10 and 20 years old for three months. Since then it has been relatively quiet in the park.
The cheerful former animal caretaker of Diergaarde Blijdorp has now been ‘world famous’ in Sint Willebrord through all media attention. “Everyone knows me and greet me warmly. You don’t want to know how much statements of support I have had: crates of beer, children’s drawings, flowers, cards and even pieces of meat, it just didn’t stop. ”
Despite the abuse, Martin does not cherish a resort against his minor attackers. He has more difficulty with the man of 40 who mixed in battle. According to the public prosecutor, that man was guilty of beating and kicking Martin’s face.
“He suddenly appeared after the minds had been calmly again. “You have to stay with your legs from those boys,” he cried. Apparently he was under the assumption that I had beaten one of the boys while it had only stayed with words. He gave me a push so I fell back. “
On Thursday, the case with the police court serves against the adult suspect. The lawsuits against five minor suspects later follow closed doors. In the meantime, the community in Sint Willebrord will voices for its own youth center. Martin therefore heartily agrees:
“It may be clear that you can’t just beat someone together. Those young guests must also lose their eggs, which is very understandable. They need to get the chance to have a little fun among themselves. Therefore try to do something for them. ”
