Alexandra Popp was captain of the DFB selection for several years. Now it is clear who will succeed.

National coach Christian Wück has made an important personnel decision: Giulia Gwinn will lead the German national team of women as a captain in the future. The appointment announced Wück after the first training session of the European Championship on the DFB campus.

The 25-year-old right-back from FC Bayern was considered a favorite for the office after she had already given the DFB selection after Alexandra Popp’s resignation in October. Now Wück officially confirmed her as a captain. Janina Minge from VfL Wolfsburg takes on the role of the deputy.

Gwinn has a lot of experience: The “national player of the year 2024” has already played 57 caps. At the 2023 World Cup, she was missing after her second cruciate ligament rupture, but at the 2024 Olympics, she secured the DFB team with a converted penalty in the small final against Spain (1-0).

With a view to the upcoming European Championship in Switzerland (July 2 to 27), the Nations League should serve as preparation. On Friday (8:45 p.m.) Germany will meet the Netherlands in Breda, four days later the duel with Austria in Nuremberg (6.15 p.m.). Both games are available in the live ticker at T-Online.
