Tesla has increased the prices for its premium models Model S and Model X worldwide. At the same time, free supercharging for the first owners of these vehicles returns.
• In Germany, the price for the Model S increases by 18 percent
• Tesla introduces free charging on superchargers
• Increasing production costs, a strategic realignment to the premium segment and the attempt to compensate for earlier price reductions
Price increases for Model S and Model X
The prices for the Tesla Model S have increased in Germany, as the configurator shows, from 92,990 euros to 109,900 euros, which corresponds to an increase of around 18 percent. With Model X, the new price is 114,900 euros, around 15 percent more than before. Similar adjustments were made in other European countries, as Teslamag reports. In the United States, the price for the Model X increased by $ 5,000 to $ 84,990. The more powerful plaid version now costs $ 99,990. While no price changes have so far been reported for the Model S in North America, there is also a general trend at higher prices.
Free supercharging as a sales incentive
In parallel to the price increases, Tesla introduces the free supercharging for first owners of Model S and Model X, writes Teslamag. Vehicles that are newly acquired can be invited to Tesla’s supercharger stations unlimited as long as they are in first hand. This offer has already been an important sales argument for these models in the past, but was abolished in 2016. The reintroduction is now being reintroduced in a phase in which Tesla is increasingly relating to high -priced vehicles and may want to create additional purchase motivation.
Reasons for the price adjustments
There is no official reason for the latest price changes. However, industry analysts see several possible causes. Tesla endeavors to reduce the production costs of his vehicles and said in January that the average material and labor costs had dropped to a record low in the fourth quarter, which is particularly due to the decline in raw material prices, Reuters reports. Strategic market considerations could also be behind the adaptation. The company is increasingly focusing on the premium area, while the demand for cheaper models such as Model 3 and Model Y has come under pressure.
