Hertha BSC presented Stefan Leitl as a new trainer. The former Hannover coach inherits in the capital Cristian Fiél, from whom the Berliners had separated on Sunday. Already then it was likely that Leitl would take over the position, but still had to be reached with the Hanoverians, in which Leitl – despite the exemption in December – was still under contract. In Berlin, Konstanz is finally hoping for on the head coaching chair, which had changed the owner nine times in the past six years.
“We are glad that with Stefan Leitl we were able to win a very experienced trainer for us who knows the league very well and has proven at his previous stations that he can shape and develop teams and players. We are convinced that we will quickly get back on track with Stefan Leitl and his assistant coach Andre Mijatović, ”explained sports director Benjamin Weber.
Leitl had looked after the second division team for two and a half years and had to vacate his post as a table seventh shortly before the turn of the year. Missing consistency and “extreme outlier” criticized 96 sports director Marcus Mann. At that time, the starting point in the 2nd Bundesliga seemed promising. At Hertha it is now the primary task of the former Fürthers not to make the distance downwards. The Berliners separate only five points with a not significantly better goal difference on the relegation relegation place (to the table).
For Leitl, Berlin is the fourth station in the lower house. The first ended in Ingolstadt in 2019 after just one year, where he had also looked after the professionals after several young teams. At Fürth, the 47-year-old then had more than three years in 121 games. With Hanover he posted 89 games and the best point cut of his career with 1.42. As long as Leitl in Hanover or Fürth, no coach had held out in a row in Berlin since 2019 (to all Hertha coaches with balance sheets).
Leitl said about his new job: “Hertha BSC is a large club with enormous potential and a passionate fan base. The task of stabilizing, developing and making this team excites me enormously. I look forward to working with the players, the team around the club and the fans who make this club unique. ”
