Football goalkeeper Sophia Winkler is moving from SGS Essen to Eintracht Frankfurt for the new season. Both Bundesliga clubs confirmed this on Monday.

At Eintracht, the 21-year-old received a contract until 2029. “I have been in Essen for eight years and received my first invitations for the German A national team last year. It feels like the right time from the summer Taking the next steps to develop and measure me on top level, “said Winkler.

Winkler in Essen since 2017

She wanted to “develop primarily in a sporty and personally at Eintracht”, but also “come with the big dream to win titles”. In summer 2017 Winkler was after Eat Came and debuted in the Bundesliga of the women in 2021. So far, she completed 69 division games in the SGS jersey and was used for the first time for the German national team at 6-0 in Switzerland.

“Since she is a national player, it is completely clear that Sophia is an option for the big clubs,” said SGS coach Markus Högner. “For me, she may be the best goalkeeper in Germany, especially with high balls, she has been performing absolutely constant for several years and has developed incredibly.”

Frankfurt’s Johannes before switching to Wolfsburg

Now Winkler joins the Frankfurt women in the summer. Their regular number one stina Johannes, whose contract expires, is currently associated with VfL Wolfsburg.

According to media reports, the goalkeeper, who, like Winkler, is part of the DFB contingent for the upcoming Nation League games, is about to switch to the DFB Cup winner. There Johannes would follow the former national goalkeeper Merle Frohms, who will leave the club after the end of the season.
