A hundred years old and still by bike. The Schalord could not wish for a better birthday present. She cycles weekly, with her loyal bike buddy Geert, always with a stopover at Stamcafé De Kogelvanger for coffee and cake. To celebrate her centenary, the whole family cycled behind her on Saturday.
The knew nothing. In the hall of the Vredenbergh care home, her whole family was waiting for her. When the elevator doors open and everyone starts singing loudly, the penny also falls for her. After the shock a big smile follows. “I didn’t expect this, but how great that everyone is there.”
“You are a cycling history book.”
And there he stood: her familiar duo bike, with which she already made about 130 rides with bicycle buddies Breda. But for this special occasion he was festively decorated. “A hundred years old cycles here!” Did it get up in large letters.
Daughter Ingrid had come up with the surprise: “Cycling is so important to her.” In addition to the movement, which is also important at this age, she can always vent her heart at bike buddy Geert. “When she had just moved to the nursing home she had it Really difficult. Cycling has been very important in this. At Geert she shares things that she might not even tell us. ”

The surprise moves the: “I feel so small that they do all this for me,” she says with a vibrate voice. “I don’t know what I have earned from, but I really like it that everyone there is. ” A big hug for Geert follows.
That is mutual, says Geert. “We have a lot of fun on the bike. You are a living history book with all your stories, “he says cheerfully.
“Then they can also see how far I cycle every week.”
Fortunately, the, Geert and the family of the Saturday are more lucky: “The sun is even starting to shine a bit.”
Dé and Geert led the procession, followed by the whole family by bike. The ride went to Stamcafé De Kogelvanger, a trip of 5 kilometers. After a festive lunch, coffee and cake, the way back was on the program. A total of 10 kilometers – and that on her centenary! But that seems to bother the nothing.
“Then they can finally see how far it is,” she jokes. “Real sporting achievement, you know!”
Geert nods laughing. “If they don’t get through, I say,” Kick through! ” And then we go again. ” The two have been an inseparable duo for three years now. “She can tell her story with me, and I listen. Sometimes grumbling, sometimes laughing, but always cozy. ”
