Thomas Horsch will give up the job as the Bremener coach in the summer after more than four years. The 56-year-old wants to devote himself to a new task.
Werder has to look around for a new head coach for the women’s team playing in the Bundesliga. As the club announced on Thursday, the collaboration with Thomas Horsch will end after this season. As he explains, Horsch has decided to want to do something new and to leave Werder after eight and a half years. He will therefore not extend his expiring contract.
From January 2017, Horsch initially acted as an assistant coach of Florian Kohfeldt at the U23 team in the 3rd division, before Kohfeldt and he took over the Bundesliga team together in October 2017. As head coach of the women’s team, he has acted on the Weser since April 2021.
This is a time that I will never forget and from which I will take a lot with me. I would like to thank you for that. But for me the moment came to beat up a new chapter at the end of the season.

Werder wants to clarify the Horsch successor quickly
Werder’s sports director Clemens Fritz regrets that Horsch will not continue. Together with department head Birte Brüggemann, he “laid a strong foundation with the Werder women”. In the future, the club wants to build on the good development and further develop women’s football at Werder. Brüggemann hopes that a successor can be found quickly for Horsch. There should be “quickly clarity” there.
The head coaching position is of significant importance in women’s football and also an extremely relevant factor for the squad planning of the new season.

With the Werder women, Horsch is currently in 8th place in the Bundesliga. Eight games are still on this season. In addition, he and his team qualified for the semi-finals of the DFB Cup on Wednesday evening with a 1-0 win at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
