The municipality of Emmen wants to make more than a million euros available for the relocation of the library to Mondriaanplein. It is a loan from the Facet culture organization.
The renovation and adjustment of the new accommodation in the pavilion building must start just after the summer of next year. The library must open in the following year. The current location on Noorderplein is tight, especially after the art movement was added in 2022.
The Emmen city council agreed in May last year with the relocation of the library. The municipality is responsible for the renovation of the pavilion, while Facet is responsible for the design of the new library. Total costs: 18.1 million euros, slightly higher than the previously set 17 million euros.
According to a calculation last year, Facet attracts on average around 190,000 visitors a year, at the new place the organization expects to grow towards 300,000 visitors a year. The move must be able to absorb that development.
At the same time, the new accommodation must help against vacancy in the center. Facet will soon take 4,500 square meters of space instead of 3,000 square meters now.
The city council will vote for the extra budget next month. The intention is for Facet to refund the extra money – among other things by making 600,000 euros itself and paying more rent.
