VfL Gummersbach clearly lost to SG Flensburg-Handewitt on Tuesday evening in the European League. After a strong first half, the Gummersbacher resolved decisively.
Due to the 31:36 (19:18), the Gummersbacher stay in the group table on two points, Flensburg is 6: 0 points at the top of the group. For VfL, however, there are still three game days to reach the next round.
The best thrower on the part of the Gummersbacher was the extremely strong DHB international Julian Köster, especially in the first round, at Flensburg Johannes Golla convinced with ten goals and Simon Pytlick (7 goals).
Gummersbach caught a good start
It took a little time for the series of attacks by both teams to get going. In addition to a few ball losses, the goalkeepers were allowed to distinguish themselves at the beginning of the game – Dominik Kuzmanovic in Gummersbacher Tor and Flensburg’s Kevin Möller parried a lot until after three minutes the first goal was scored.
But then the game picked up speed. Both teams searched the fast path to the front, both of them found their rhythm on the offensive. In particular, the Gummersbacher knew how to search the way to the Flensburg Gate quickly for balls, Ole Pregler scored after one in the empty goal for 5: 3 (7th minute).
Peat festival one in halftime one
The favorite Flensburger, in which coach Ales Pajovic was on the sidelines in his second game, gradually increased and equalized by Johan Hansen after ten minutes (8: 8). A little later, the North Germans managed the first tour to 13:12 – circular runner Golla used one of the many fine allusions of the SG to the circle.
But the VfL stayed tuned, driven by the striking bricklayers and preglers in the back room, was kept well in the very torrid first half. Gummersbach even led to the break – with 19:18 we went to the cabins.
VfL fails in the start in half two two of them
As good as the first round for the hosts ended, things went so bad at the beginning of the second half. As a result of a four-goal run for Flensburg, Gummersbach coach Gudjon Sigurdsson was forced to take an early break. Led by Pytlick, the Flensburgers were suddenly the clearly better team and kept the VfL constantly at the distance.
Gummerbach was challenged. Sigurdsson brought veteran and ex-Flensburg Kentin Mahé in the middle of the second half, who was on the pitch for the first time after injury. The sign of the turn? No. Flensburg continued to hit routinely, the hosts were much more difficult than in round one.
Only a four-goal run for 30:34 (54th) gummersbach gave hope again. However, Benjamin Buric in the goal of the Flensburger pulled the euphoria brake at VfL with two outstanding parades. Flensburg drove the game home safely.
Revanche on Saturday?
For Gummersbach, however, the quarter -finals are still concerned – the winners of the four groups reach the quarter -finals directly, the teams in the ranks two and three of the main round determine the other participants in the round of the best eight in one play -off. So hopes for progress, especially over the playoffs, remain the VfL. The final tournament will take place in Hamburg at the end of May.
There will be a chance to rehabilitate in a few days: Flensburg welcomes VfL on Saturday (February 15, 2025) – this time in the league.
