By putting the roses upright, Ahmed hopes that they not only serve as a memorial, but also as a warning for motorists. Natacha’s death has also cut him in a lot. “It wasn’t my child, but it hurts a lot.”
Crossing places ‘very complex’
For the municipality, the fatal accident was a reason to have safety on the roundabout examined. Research agency Goudappel examined safety and concluded that the traffic situation at the crossing places of the Máximalaan and the Faunalaan is ‘very complex’.
Moreover, the roundabout is too spacious for a roundabout within built -up areas and motorists are hardly stimulated to reduce when they approach it.
Add to that some cyclists pay poor attention, and you have one ‘Situation with high risk for road safety’the researchers conclude.
Roundabout ‘does not meet safety requirements’
Goudappel advised to adjust the situation and the municipality took over the recommendation from the research agency. “In 2024, the roundabout no longer fully meets the current safety requirements that belong to the current position of the road,” the municipality concluded in November last year.
The municipality promised ‘to implement some measures’ in the short term’, ‘to increase the attention of road users and to lower the speed of vehicles’. Those measures were taken at the end of last week.
