Black strips under the eyes: that’s the reason

Football players do not make up for fun – there is a clear intention behind the black stripes under the eyes. But do you really help?

They are normal for the players on the field, spectators could be confused: professionals can always be seen in football who wear black stripes under their eyes. These so-called “Eye Black” markings are either applied as a paste or attached in the form of adhesive strips under the eyes.

The idea behind “Eye Black” is simple: the dark strips should minimize light reflections and improve the players’ view. The black is intended to help reduce disturbing glare, especially with intensive sunlight or bright floodlights.

However, it is discussed whether “Eye Black” is really so effective. Some studies indicate that the glare could actually be reduced – but the results are not clear. Many players report no difference. It is also striking that athletes do without such aids in similar disciplines such as football or rugby.

The black strips of cork and fat were originally made. The earliest known cases of athletes who paint their eyes black and go back to the 1930s. Today the pastes consist of modern ingredients such as beeswax. Over time, the function of the “Eye Black” has changed.

In addition to the desired reduction in glare, it now also fulfills decorative purposes. Since the 2000s, players have been using the black stripes to spread messages. Short texts such as Bible verses, memories of late friends or university logos can be found on the adhesive strip. Some players even use their facial painting as part of their strategy to intimidate opponents.
