You get up and hurry out the door. You are already on the late side, and you see your car until your frustration: scratching again!
One of the fastest ways to get your car windows ice-free is to use a window discovery. This is a special means that you can buy in a spray bottle and with which you can inject the frozen windows. It contains substances that ensure that the ice melts quickly. Spray the windows and the lighting well and wait a few seconds so that it can work in. Usually the ice can then quickly be wiped away with a diamond scraper.
Do you not have a window discovery in the house? No problem. You can also use a bottle of water at room temperature. Fill a bottle or watering can the night before and leave it in the house. If you put this water over the window in the morning, the ice can melt fairly quickly. But beware: do not use hot water! Due to the sudden temperature difference, the window can crack, the ANWB tips.
If you do not have a window discovery, the classic window scraper remains the most reliable option. Place the scraper diagonally against the window and start to scratch carefully. This works the fastest and prevents scratches on your window. Take a moment to remove the ice quietly.
Do you have an asterisk in your window? Then be extra careful, because the use of a scraper in combination with a crack or crack can aggravate the damage according to the ANWB.
Before you start scratching you can already turn on the heating in the car, but then you have to let the car run while scratching. Place the blazers on the windshield and the heating on the hottest position.
Turn on the recirculation position so that the air can dry the inside of the window faster. This prevents the window from covering again. Do you have a cloth with you? Then use it to dry the window on the inside.
Note the rear window! Do not scratch the rear window when the heating of the rear window is already on. This can cause cracking, because the ice suddenly warms up while you scratch it. The window can even break due to the temperature difference.
It is always easier to prevent you from scratching your car windows than to have to work with it afterwards. Fortunately there are a few useful tips:
Clean your windows: Dirty windows freeze faster. Dirt and moisture adhere to the window, which promotes ice growth. Make sure your windows are clean before you go the night.
Use an anti-ice blanket: You can lay this over the windshield. This way you prevent ice from being on it. It is a simple way to quickly make your car ice -free in the morning.
Turn off your wipers: Make sure that your windscreen wipers do not freeze. Turn them off (and all the way down) before you park the car so that they do not freeze in the cold night. If you don’t do this, the windscreen wipers can damage if you start the car the next morning and they want to wipe them automatically.
You probably noticed it: some mornings is easier to scratch than other days. Why is that? The reason is often in the humidity and nature – the temperature.
When the air is moist and the temperature drops below freezing, the moisture freezes on the windows and thick layers of ice form. This is often more difficult to remove than when there is only a thin ice layer.
The thickness of the window also plays a role. Single glass freezes faster than double glazing, so if you have an older car with single glass, you may often suffer from frozen windows. In addition, the position of the wind and the amount of snow, when it snows, can also play a role.
Did you know that you can get a fine of 250 euros if you don’t make your car windows well ice -free? After all, it is mandatory to have a good view if you go out on the road.
Only making a small peephole in your frozen windshield is therefore not enough. The same applies to the exterior mirrors and the side windows. So get as much as possible away from your windows before you drive! Not only because otherwise you risk a ticket, but also because it is safer for everyone if you can also see all fellow road users around you when you start driving.
Now you can get on the road safely (and hopefully warm). If you come up with a question on the way for the find it out! Editors, send it in!
