Ukraine can use a mobile research laboratory in the short term to investigate war crimes. Defense donates one for this Joint deployable Exploitation and Analysis Laboratory (Jdeal). A delegation from Ukraine today signed the contract for the transfer. This makes the Netherlands a contribution to combating impunity and research into war crimes in the country -ravaged country.

JDeal is a mobile laboratory that consists of 13 containers. It contains all kinds of means to do forensic and technical investigation on location. Such as investigating fingerprints, analyzing DNA traces and reading mobile phones.

The mobile lab is easy to transport and can be used within a few days. A team of researchers from Ukraine has been trained in the Netherlands in the past period to work with the laboratory. The intention is that Hon. Prof. MS Bokarius Forensic Science Institute will use it. This is a forensic institute and falls under the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice. The lab will be transported to Kyiv as quickly as possible.

Civil donation

In this case it is not a military, but a civil donation of defense. It shows the importance that the government attaches to the investigation of war crimes in Ukraine. The Netherlands already contributes to this in several areas. This is done, for example, with the use of forensic investigation teams of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee in Ukraine. They conduct research under the flag of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The Ministry of Defense also contributes to other resources and financially.

European Defense Agency

JDeal is a collaborative project of the European Defense Agencysupporting initiatives in the field of international cooperation. Jdeal is a Dutch initiative. It is an effective example of international, innovative cooperation in the field of trace research.
