The worst fears have been confirmed for Ricarda Haaser: The ski racer dragged a cruciate ligament tear in her fall at the home World Cup. And not just that.
The joy of the Austrians about the first gold at the home World Cup in Saalbach-Hinterglemm is slightly clouded by an injury.
Skir racer Ricarda Haaser suffered a crack of the cruciate ligament and an inner meniscus tear in the right knee during a fall in the Super-G. According to the association, the 31 -year -old athlete is operated on in a clinic near Innsbruck.
The athlete had fallen after a jump shortly before the finish. “Happiness and bad luck are so close together,” said Roswitha Stadlober, President of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV), in ORF.
Haaser’s teammate Stephanie Venier raced to victory at the first individual race of the World Championships and had the hosts cheered early on gold.
After moderate performance in the season, pessimists feared that the World Cup could become a home debacle for the ski nation. Austria had not won a gold medal in the title fights two years ago in Couplevel. At that time Haaser won bronze in combination.
