It is the highlight of the year for the volleyball players of SSC Schwerin. In the play-off first leg of the Champions League, Vero Volley Milano will be on Wednesday. There are four Olympic champions from Paris in the star ensemble from the Lombardy.

Already reaching the play-offs in the Champions League is a great success for the Bundesliga club. In view of the opponent, the fact that the path also leads to the quarter -finals is not very likely. Nevertheless, the Bundesliga leader and German record champions look at the home game on Wednesday (6 p.m.) with great joy. After all, the Italian Olympic champions Paola Egonu, Anna Danesi, Myriam Sylla and Alessia Orro are in the squad of the guests.

Last Schwerin top duel six years ago

So much world class at once there was not often to see in Schwerin. The SSC has already contested some games against high -class teams in international competition. The 3: 1 against the Italian club Pallavolo Scandicci, for example, dates from February 26, 2019.

Since then, from the perspective of Schwerin’s coach Felix Koslowski, the clubs from Turkey and Italy have been pulled away. “It was even closer to four or five years ago. But since the two countries financially dominate the world market, it is the case that there is a collection of top players.”

Koslowski: “These are just people”

The coach established how big the difference is now. “Milano’s third attacker probably earns more than our squad.” Nevertheless, Koslowski does not see his team without a chance. “We have to try to keep every sentence open as long as possible and to bring it to the crunchtime. In the end, it will only be people who deal with it.”

A free week for regeneration for the SSC

In order to keep up with the Italians, the SSC needs a risky playing style, which could also lead to more mistakes. But captain Anne Hölzig was relaxed in this regard: “What should happen? Worse than the ball hit the block in the block.”

After all, the Schweriners successfully completed the intensive January with eight competitive games, celebrated seven victories with just one defeat. SSC has been free of play since last Wednesday and used the days to regenerate.
