The large shipping companies Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk are now officially part of an alliance.

This means that shipping companies from Hamburg and Copenhagen, which are among the largest in the world, share the load space of their container ships. The partnership, which has been prepared for more than a year, is called “Gemini Cooperation”.

Modern alliances in international shipping were created in the second half of the 1990s. Nowadays they are an essential part of the industry. They enable shipping companies to reduce costs and expand their offer. Price agreements are not permitted to companies.

Rederei wants to increase punctuality

The new alliance has announced that after a few months to achieve a so-called timetable defiability from the start to target port of more than 90 percent. Since Corona pandemic, the entire industry has failed to achieve earlier punctuality values.

According to numbers from the analysis company Sea-Intelligence, Maersk was 60.4 percent in December of the previous year the most punctual of the large line shipping companies. Hapag-Lloyd came to 49 percent.

Aviation as an idea generator

The alliance’s container ships are said to drive more relently thanks to the so-called hub-and-spoke system. The system stipulates that the large container ships alone start the big ports (“hubs”). The goods are distributed from there. The alliance calculus is that fewer port runs lead to fewer delays.

Competitor MSC drives alone

Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk were previously bound in other alliances: Hapag-Lloyd was part of “The Alliance”. The alliance belonged to the shipping companies One from Japan (headquarters in Singapore), Hmm from South Korea and Yang Ming from Taiwan. The Asian shipping companies plan to continue working together in the “Premier Alliance”.

Maersk and the world’s largest shipping company MSC from Switzerland separated at the turn of the year. MSC is currently not part of an alliance.
