A training trip ended in the hospital for six German railway bike national drivers. Now there is first news about the state of health.

Actually, they wanted to prepare for the European railway bike championship in February in Mallorca. But then on Thursday a car raced to six drivers of the Deutsche Bahnrad national team and seriously injured the athletes. Max-David Briese told the “Ostsee-Zeitung”: “We haven’t been on the road for long, then I saw that someone fell in front of me. After that, I only know that I was lying on the side of the road and was bled everywhere.”

The 21-year-old added: “There is not that much memory anymore.” According to the newspaper, Briese suffered a severe concussion and numerous grazes. Two bleeding injuries in his face had to be sewn. According to information from the dpa news agency, a teammate from Briese, Bruno Kessler, is already in the team hotel. The Leipziger had suffered various abrasions, but was spared from broken bones.

Louis Gentzik is also about to be released from the hospital. The 18-year-old suffered a hair tear in his shoulder and a slight concussion, but did not have to be operated on. Gentzik wrote on Instagram: “I can give the current situation for my part.”

It is currently not known how it looks with teammates Benjamin Boos, Tobias Buck-Gramcko and Moritz Autorstein. In the Association German Cycling, DPA information is currently being advised to move one of the injured to better care to Germany. A final decision had not yet been made until Tuesday afternoon.

How exactly did the accident occur? According to the Association German Cycling, the driver, who is said to have been 89 years old, overlooked the group and drove into it. National coach Lucas Schadlich, who accompanied the group by car, was an eyewitness to the accident.

The incident once again showed the dangers of cycling outside of the races – and aroused memories of accidents of the past. It was only last Friday that the Italian young driver Sara Piffer was hit by a car and succumbed to her injuries.

Gentzik appealed: “Take the whole thing with you that the next time you are on the road, you are careful and considerate with each other.”
