Good news from the schools: the Bird Counting Week for Schools saw record participation. More than 5,300 students from 227 schools together counted more than 10,600 birds, a strong increase compared to the 3,940 students from 147 schools last year. Less good news is that the number of birds in Flanders continues to decline. Sympathizers and volunteers counted an average of 21 birds per garden last weekend, compared to 22 last year. The downward trend has been going on for some time.
