Sweden seized a ship on the Baltic Sea in the night from Sunday to Monday that a submarine fiber optic cable would have damaged. The Swedish Public Prosecution Service states that. The ship was between Sweden and Latvia. On Sunday, the Latvian public broadcaster reported that a data cable in the area was damaged, presumably by ‘external influences’.

It is still unclear whether the ship seized by Sweden is involved in the damage caused on Sunday. It is also not yet known which ship it is. The Latvian Navy identified three ships that were seen near the location of the incident on Sunday. Latvia spoke of one “suspected ship” that possibly caused the damage to the cable.

The Swedish police, coast guard and armed forces are investigating the incident. Latvia previously sent a warship to investigate the suspected sabotage. NATO is also involved in the investigation.

According to the Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina, the damage to the data cable is ‘considerable’. The Latvian broadcaster LVRTC, which uses the cable, would have experienced interruptions in the data flow.
