The meta-hit pop of the Berlin fictional character bows deeply to Falco.
In fact, hope dies last, in the final song of FEEL ZU LÄT. Fuffufzich demonstrates what great hits can do: putting the all-encompassing world-weariness into perspective through the failure of a private love. If things don’t work out with this guy, the planet can end. But to avoid being cynical, “Hope” is so orchestral and over the top, fat synth drops that hit hard on the soul, more Hall & Oates than Human League.
Is that actually profound? Or is it kitsch?
On the second album, Vanessa Loibl keeps the fictional character that the actress created in 2018 even more in limbo than on the debut HEARTBREAKEREI (2022), when the parody was still too obvious. Now Fuffifufzich wanders from Grönemeyer to Alexander Marcus and then zigzags back again with detours via The Stars.
The wide-legged ballad “I love you maybe forever” would fit well into the Wanda repertoire, but above all Fuffifufzich bows very deeply to Falco, and not just in “Feel It”, when she infects with English phrases in a snapping voice Lyrics recited over an eclectic mix of styles that doesn’t shy away from wide-legged “Jeanny” guitars. But then she also cheers you on with discursive pop lines: “There’s a leak in my system.” Is that actually profound? Or is it kitsch? Above all, it’s never slapstick, but above all a playful use of quotes and influences, and so a lot of things on FEEL ZU LATE remain vague, but this associative indifference is a great joy.
