The cycling world is in shock. Young racing driver Sara Piffer is dead. She was only 19 years old.
Sad news from Italy: 19-year-old cyclist Sara Piffer from Italy died after an accident. This was announced by the Italian cycling association ACCPI together with their team Mendelspeck.
As the ANSA news agency reports, Piffer was hit by a car on Friday morning near the city of Trento in northern Italy. The local public prosecutor’s office has started an investigation into road traffic homicide.
At the time of the accident, Piffer was traveling with her brother. Her Mendelspeck team wrote in the message that she was leaving a gap that could not be filled and that they wanted to remember her and her smile.
Fatal accidents are not uncommon in cycling. Just last September, 18-year-old Swiss young rider Muriel Furrer died after a fall during the Junior World Championship race in Zurich. The death of the Swiss Gino Mäder in 2023 and the Norwegian André Drege in 2024 also recently shocked the cycling world.
