The drugs were found in November during a major check at the recreational park. According to the municipality, the quantity of drugs in the home was so large that it could be classified as a ‘trade quantity or stock.’ That is why deputy mayor Gert Zagt has decided to keep the house closed until at least April 22.

During the inspection, narcotics such as several kilos of hemp and hemp-related items, prohibited weapons, illegal habitation and buildings and several environmental violations such as asbestos and sunken boats were found throughout the park. All possible violations are currently under further investigation. It is also examined whether criminal prosecution is possible.

Multiple signals

The inspection was carried out after the municipality received several signals that something was wrong at the park. This also involved collaboration with the police, fire brigade and the environmental service. Dogs have also been used to detect prohibited substances.

According to the municipality, the park has a long history of violations. “I was shocked by the situation after I took office. Recent signals and reports are so serious that we did not wait for a broader, integrated approach with this action,” Mayor Mark Verheijen said shortly after the inspection. “We want to send the signal to bona fide, but certainly also to rogue entrepreneurs, that we do not accept islands of lawlessness in our municipality.”
