Ireland and the United Kingdom will be hit by storm Éowyn today. Both have declared code red. In Ireland, this storm is already the ‘heaviest storm ever’ to hit the country with gusts of 183 km/h and an average wind speed of 135 km/h. The fact that this storm is lashing out with such devastating winds is partly due to the fact that this is a ‘bomb cyclone’. But what is that? Is it as serious as it sounds? And is it common in Europe? HLN science journalist Martijn Peters explains everything about this rare weather phenomenon.
