Elvira Öberg actually wanted to attack again in Antholz to collect points for the overall World Cup. However, now she is cancelled.
No good news for the third place in the overall World Cup: The Swede Elvira Öberg will not take part in the Biathlon World Cup in Antholz (Italy) due to illness. The 25-year-old wrote on Instagram: “This rollercoaster ride of the season only seems to continue as today I woke up with symptoms of a developing cold.”
The photo that Öberg posted shows the biathlete in bright sunshine. She wears a dark outdoor jacket and pink-tinted sports glasses on her head. She looks into the camera with a slight smile, while a wintry mountain landscape can be seen in the background. Öberg further wrote: “I am not willing to risk my health at this point in the season, so it is very unlikely that I will compete in another race this week.”
The World Cup begins on February 12th and lasts until February 23rd. That’s why she currently wants to treat herself to some rest. However, she admitted: “I’m devastated but the only thing I can do now is to recover and get back fit in time for the World Championships.”
The timing is bad for Öberg. The Swede won the mass start in Ruhpolding. She came 15th in the individual and fourth in the relay. She was also able to impress with a third place in the pursuit in Oberhof.
Due to her failure, the race for the overall World Cup should become even more exciting and probably a duel. Franziska Preuß is in front, followed by Lou Jeanmonnot. The Frenchwoman is 142 points behind the German. Preuß has collected 749 points so far. Öberg is in third place with 571 points and cannot collect any points for the time being due to her failure at the weekend.
