THEthe art critic Luca Beatrice, president of the Rome Quadrennial 2025, is died in Turin at the age of 63. Since Sunday, after being seized by an illness, he was hospitalized in intensive care at the Molinette hospital in the Piedmontese capital.

The news of his death was announced on social media by his brother Giulio, with a moving dedication. “Two brothers are not two friends,” he wrote, adding that they are instead “branches of the same tree that may diverge over the years, but their bond will be eternal. Bye Luca, have a good trip.”

Who was Luca Beatrice

Born in Turin on 4 April 1961, Luca Beatrice graduated in History of Cinema in the Piedmontese capital, then obtaining a specialization diploma in Art History at the University of Siena. His career began at the end of the 1980s, first curating historical exhibitions on Turin futurism and then important art exhibitions throughout Europe.

From 2003 to 2005 he was curator of the Prague Biennialand in 2009 the Italian Pavilion for the 53rd Venice Art Biennale. From 2010 to 2018 it was president of the Turin Readers’ Club, and for just under a year, since February 2024, he was president of the Quadriennale 2025, the main periodic exhibition dedicated to contemporary Italian art.

In Turin Luca Beatrice taught history of art and history of design at the Albertina Academy, contemporary art at the IED and contemporary art and culture at the IULM in Milan. Previously he had also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo, at the Brera Academy in Milan and at the Iaad in Turin.

The condolences of the institutions

Many certificates of esteem were sent to family members after the bereavement. Starting from that of Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, who spoke of an “unspeakable pain” for the death of Luca Beatrice. «We mourn the passing of a friend, of a protagonist of Italian and international culture who trained artists with his knowledge.”.

Condolences were also expressed by La Quadriennale Foundation, according to which the critic has given «strong impetus to the Education’s activity for the promotion of contemporary Italian art, through the launch of a visionary and pluralistic edition».

AND the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, she said she was “saddened” by the passing of “one of the most important and appreciated Italian art critics and president of the Rome Quadrennial.
