At Duksch’s Schwalbe I really thought that the red card would stay. Except for offside situations, I simply have 0 trust in the VAR. Luckily, to my surprise, the red card was withdrawn. If there had been yellow for the swallow, the whole thing would have been perfectly rounded off. But you can’t have everything and at Schwalben the referees only decide when they want to pull out the card depending on their mood.

A little later the VAR did VAR things again and confirmed the lack of trust. It’s inexplicable to me why there was no hand penalty for Bremen. Of course there was probably no great intention and the Augsburg man is involved in a duel, but in the end the arm is spread out in this position when you want to bring the ball down with your chest. If the ball only falls on the arm and does not touch any other part of the body, then it is clearly handball.

Basically, when it comes to penalties, I often don’t think the relationship between offense and punishment is appropriate. That was a safe situation and then converting it into a penalty, which I think goes in at over 80% of the time, so it’s basically a sure goal, I don’t think it’s appropriate. But that’s another discussion.

In that case there should have been a penalty and when you see other HE, you wonder whether the SRs and VARs roll the dice when the whistle is blown and when not. I know it’s a very complex topic, but I found this situation relatively easy to evaluate.

Otherwise, Bremen played quite well, the ball moved well, but the last pass or finish was always missing, except for the shot against the post. Defensively, the goals conceded were pretty slack and the goals conceded were very cheap. The bottom line is that it’s neither fish nor meat if you have neither a strong defense nor a strong offensive with the last punch. I believe Bremen’s strengths lie more in the offensive, but today there was too little creativity and then it was relatively easy for Augsburg to carry out their match plan.
