The design thinking approach can contribute to the development of creative ideas and innovative solutions. The five steps of this process are used by leading companies, among others, to develop successful products and services.
Leading companies rely on design thinking
Design thinking, a methodology used by leading companies like Apple and Google, according to a CNBC story, offers a structured approach to developing creative ideas.
Speaking to CNBC, Allison Butler, psychology professor and director of the Innovation and Design Experience for All program at Bryant University, emphasized the importance of design thinking as a creative approach to developing and successfully implementing innovative ideas. She emphasized that this process can be used effectively not only in large companies, but also in small teams and even in personal work environments.
According to Butler, the concept of design thinking is a process that consists of five steps: research, definition, idea development, prototyping and testing.
Openness to new concepts
At the beginning there is research, in which you sensitively deal with the needs and problems of the target group. This makes it possible to gain better insight into the situation and develop targeted solutions. This is followed by the definition, in which the insights gained are converted into clear problem descriptions. This helps to sharpen the focus and set the direction for the development of ideas.
The next step, idea development, is about generating creative solutions. It is important here to allow all ideas and not to evaluate them too early. An open and collaborative approach promotes the emergence of innovative concepts. After various ideas have been collected, it’s time to create prototypes. These can be simple models or simulations that help make the ideas tangible and test them.
Feedback as an opportunity
The final step is testing, where the prototypes are tried out with the target group. Feedback and insights are collected, which in turn flow into the further development of the ideas. This iterative process makes it possible to continuously improve the solutions and adapt them to the needs of the users.
According to Butler, an important aspect of design thinking is openness to feedback. Critical feedback should be seen as an opportunity to improve and further develop the ideas. It is important not only to accept positive feedback, but also to appreciate constructive criticism and use it as an incentive for further improvements.
