(toskanews) – Give it excavations in Pompeii revealed a large thermal complex inside a private domus, probably belonging to a member of the then elite. The complex, among the most complex and largest of those found so far, emerged from the excavation site of the Regio IX and is attached to a banquet hall, indicating how the hosts considered festive occasions precious to ensure electoral consensus or assert one’s social status. And that’s how before the banquet, we relaxed in the spa.
The director of the archaeological excavations of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel: «Here we have perhaps the largest thermal complex in a private house in Pompeii and since it was often customary to go first for a bath and then to feast, this could all be done in one house ».
A thermal journey for around thirty people: «There is the calidarium, the tepidarium and a large tub with cold water (frigidarium) and the changing room with benches that make you understand the number of people who could access these spaces». The decorations on the walls also suggest that the domus belonged to an important person, with subjects from the Trojan War and athletes, to suggest culture and power, as well as leisure and fun.
