Hélène Hendriks bought an autocue especially for Gerard Joling’s visit to her talk show De Oranjewinter. “Do I not know my own songs by heart? Often not.”

Gerard Joling has now made so many songs that he can no longer remember the lyrics of them all. He was a guest last night The Orange Winter to join the conversation at the table, but also performed with his single Altijd Vrijgezel. The direction left a somewhat false impression shot seeing the enormous teleprompter whose text Gerard read out.

Cinema screen

After the performance, Rutger asks Castricum what happened. “There’s always an atmosphere when you’re there. I don’t mind a teleprompter, but I didn’t know they also did that with cinema screens these days. Why are you wearing glasses anyway?! They were such letters, man!”

Gerard: “Yes, that wasn’t really necessary tonight! But when I see it like this, I think: I find it easy that I can read the letters, yes.”

Not by heart

Rutger is surprised about it. “You know this by heart, right?”

Gerard: “Very often not. No, tonight I happened to have a quick chat with one of the floor employees and at one point I said: ‘I’m listening to Radio Utrecht this week and in the evening I only listen to the seventies, I know every song by heart.’ n head’, and in the last ten years it has gotten to the point where I have to do an autocue every time.”

Old age

Actually, Gerard doesn’t know all the sentences by heart. “I know the parts, but then I think: what was that line again? I think it’s old age after all.”

Hélène then brings up the enormous autocue again. “Yes, here it is. We had to purchase these especially for you, because we do not work with autocues here. We thought: let’s have a big one.”

‘Thank you!’

Gerard finds it sympathetic of Hélène. “You did well. If you do it anyway, you do it big. Well, thank you. No, but it’s really nice that there is such an autocue, so at least you’re in the right place. It’s also so stupid when you suddenly think: God damn it, what was it again?”

Rutger: “And it was live and it was good.”

Gerard: “That’s nice to hear. At De Toppers you also have autocues everywhere and at my own concerts too, but of course I know individual performances by heart.”

Rutger laughs: “You go on about it for a long time, but it doesn’t bother you anymore?”
