ChatGPT, which writes texts on demand, has found its way to the use of more and more American children and teenagers when solving school assignments.

This is clear from a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, or Pew for short. The survey was answered by 1,400 American youth aged 13–17.

ChatGPT is the survey well known to young people. 79 percent of respondents say they have heard of it, while in 2023 the number was only 67 percent.

According to the survey, young people who come from wealthier families know ChatGPT best. 84 percent of young people from families with an annual net income of more than $75,000 say they have heard at least something about ChatGPT.

However, the family’s income level does not seem to affect whether a young person ends up using ChatGTP.

Based on the survey, some groups stand out as users of ChatGPT.

Among both blacks and Latinos, 31 percent said they used ChatGPT for schoolwork, while only 22 percent of whites said they had. According to Pew, there were not enough Asian respondents to give a percentage estimate.

The young people were also asked what, according to them, ChatGPT can be used for in school work. In the questions that addressed the matter, 15–21 percent of the respondents could not state their position.

Slightly more than half of the respondents approve of using ChatGPT to research new topics.

On the other hand, only 29 percent of young people approve of solving mathematical problems with ChatGPT.

When young people were asked about writing essays with ChatGPT, the percentage of those who accepted dropped to a difficult 18 percent. 44 percent do not approve of doing so.

However, the survey also reveals that the vast majority of young people’s use of ChatGPT is not actually related to solving school assignments. Only 26 percent say they used the service for this purpose.

The figure is still growing, as in 2023 the corresponding figure was only 13 percent.

Who reported on the survey Techcrunch points out that the use of ChatGPT in schoolwork can be more harmful than beneficial.

For example, one study found that students who used ChatGPT on a math test performed worse than students who did not.
