A tunnel system has been discovered under Mount Qasioun in Syria, the highest point overlooking Damascus. Forces loyal to the Assad family dug a network of tunnels that would connect the Republican Guard headquarters to the presidential palace. The tunnels are spread over an extensive area of no less than 12 square kilometers. After the fall of the Syrian regime, Mount Qasioun was one of the first places taken by the rebels who now lead the new government. Landmines and heavy weapons were found in the tunnels.
