Bundesliga: Bochum celebrates a victory against FC St. Pauli

The substitution of Moritz Broschinski gave VfL Bochum the win against FC St. Pauli. Coach Dieter Hecking brought the winger on and the winning goal was promptly scored. VfL won 1-0 (0-0).

Coach Hecking brought Broschinski on in the 65th minute, less than two minutes later the substitute served centre-forward Philipp Hofmann, who artistically completed the game.

“It was little football, but a lot of passion, a lot of fight”said Hecking to the sports show after the game, “We needed that.” And when asked about Broschinski’s substitution, the coaching fox said: “I said during the break that we have to keep going at full throttle and hopefully decide the game from the bench. Bochum found their way into the game better. That was a game in which you are defined by the duels. Something was missing for me today.”

Bochum is more committed

During the first 45 minutes, VfL proved to be the more active team in what was generally a weak game. While the Hamburg guests were unable to create a single scoring opportunity, Bochum missed several opportunities to take the lead.

The first was canceled out by St. Pauli keeper Nikola Vasilj when he easily parried a long-range shot from Maximilian Wittek in the second minute. In the second, Dieter Hecking’s team failed because of themselves: Gerrit Holtmann beat Hauke ​​Wahl nicely and went half-right towards the visitors’ goal. But apparently he had too much time to think about what he wanted to do with the ball next. In any case, the shot didn’t end up with Wittek, who was running with him, nor in the goal, but instead went past the far post.

Irvine leaves “100 percent” behind

After the break, the quality of the game improved by a few percentage points. When it came to possession of the ball, the hosts remained dominant. But this time it was St. Pauli who came close to taking the lead. Oladapo Afolayan played his way forward down the left side and crossed with great feeling into the center of the attack. Jackson Irvine rose high there, but put the header well over the home side’s box.

The North Germans’ missed opportunity was about to take revenge. Because when Dieter Hecking substituted Daniel Broschinski in the 65th minute in his 426th game as Bundesliga coach (equivalent to tenth place on the list of coaching legends), it turned out to be a stroke of luck across the board. After a nice run down the right side, the substitute crossed sharply onto the first post. Captain Hofmann anticipated the trajectory perfectly and artistically guided the ball into the net with the outside of his foot.

Fight in the final phase

After the hosts’ opening goal, the game developed into the expected battle. Noah Weißhaupt went down in a running duel with Ibrahima Sissoko, for which the guests vehemently demanded a penalty. Bochum had a second good chance to counterattack, but did not take advantage of the good opportunity to score the second goal.

Visiting coach Alexander Blessin ordered his players forward again in the final phase. But there was not more than one shot from Weißhaupt, which narrowly missed the goal. On the other side, the strong Broschinski missed two good finishing opportunities after counterattacks. In stoppage time, Adam Dzwigala was shown a red card six minutes after coming on as a substitute for a serious foul.
