René van der Gijp did not exactly enjoy the New Year’s Eve celebration in Ibiza. He flew there because his loved one wanted it, but: “Those people just sit there with whistles.”

Just after Christmas, René van der Gijp flew to Ibiza to ring in the year with his beloved Minouche van der Gijp. The two have had a marital crisis, which he hopes to have sworn off now that he is taking a day off from Today Inside. How did he like the holidays in Ibiza? Did the football analyst enjoy himself? Mwoah.

Roller whistles

It was a bit disappointing, says René. “We had New Year’s Eve in Ibiza, yes. I don’t recommend that to people. No, dude. You get a bag of chips and there are hats and caps and horns in it and then those people sit there at ten to twelve blowing them and playing whistles,” he tells Show news.

“And at ten past twelve they put it back in that bag and go home. No, it is not celebrated there. They celebrate Christmas until January 5, but New Year’s Eve is not really a thing there. Shame.”

Pretty tasty

After the weekend, the new season of Today Inside starts, where René will appear at the table for the first time not five but four days a week. “I think it’s quite nice to start again. In any case, I enjoy seeing the people I’m sitting with at the table again. We don’t visit each other, but I enjoy seeing them again.”

What does he think of his Wednesday replacement? “I think Albert Verlinde is a great guy. That’s a guy I hear everyone say: ‘He knows what making TV is.’ Then I think: yes, it will. For someone who puts it all into perspective quite flatly, every day on TV is quite a lot, because I also often think: here we go again.”

Built up anger

René’s colleagues have no problem with five times a week. “Wilfred would have preferred to do the News of the Day at six o’clock. It’s a lot. What is Johan’s drive to drive from there to Hilversum and be back in the car ten seconds after the thing is over? Yeah, I really have no idea. For me it is special that you are like that.”

Finally: is the divorce with Minouche now over? Is everything going well? “Yes, fine. No, fine. Well, everything will be fine. I’m not really worried about that.”
