KLM announced earlier in the day that it had been ‘overtaken’ by the fog. The situation looked worse than forecasts on Tuesday and in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, the spokesperson said. KLM initially had to cancel forty flights via Schiphol. That number rose to 96 on Wednesday afternoon.

Code yellow

The KNMI announced code yellow this morning due to dense fog, with local visibility up to 200 meters. The warning initially applied to almost all of the Netherlands. At the end of the morning, that warning was withdrawn for part of the country. Code yellow still applies to the provinces of Flevoland, Friesland, Limburg, North Brabant, North Holland, Utrecht, Zeeland and South Holland. That warning is in effect until 2 p.m.

Schiphol previously announced that the number of canceled flights on Wednesday increased from a few dozen to more than a hundred. In total, more than 1,100 flights were planned for this day. A spokesperson for the airport could not yet say to what extent the operation on Thursday would be affected by the forecast fog.
